Since we are situated in Central Virginia at Exit 94 off of I-64, our hotel is easily accessible from all areas of the state.

Directions: I-64 to Exit 94. At the top of the ramp, turn right onto Route 340 and follow to the intersection of Lew Dewitt Blvd. Turn left at the light onto Lew Dewitt Blvd. and continue to the first stop light. Turn left at this light onto Apple Tree Lane. Continue straight ahead and the hotel is located on the right adjacent to Cracker Barrel.

*Participants in the hands on portion of part 1 will be setting eyes in change out heads donated by McKenzie. These will be for you to keep. If you wish to participate, you will need to pre-register with Tom McComas at 540-943-1330.
 

Commercial Whitetail Deer Head Mounting Contest Rules

 

1. Time Limit: 1 point will be deducted for every 10 minutes after the initial 3 hours.  No more than 3 hours allowed.  No exceptions.

2. Tools: Mounting stands, tools, forms, etc. to be provided solely by the contestant.

3. Judge: Three judges to be selected by VTA competition Committee.  They shall be present at all times during the contest.  The decision of these 3 judges yields the winner.  Spectators can be present, but no questions/ comments are to be overheard before the contest is over.

4. Entry Fee: $10.00 required.  Please fill out on registration form.

5. Form Preparation: Forms may be prepped to include sanding, contouring, nose work, lip slots, and antler set. No eye sets.

6. Artificial Parts: No open mouth, artificial noses, eye sets, etc.  Speed type septum will be allowed and replacement nose allowed.

7. Hide Paste: Even in commercial taxidermy a good hide paste should be used.  Therefore it is mandatory that some type of hide paste be used for contest.

8. Capes: Capes are to be ready to mount.  Ears turned, flesh tanned, pickled, dry preserved, etc.  Short or long incision, whatever contestant prefers. It is suggested that prior fitting of cape to form be done to save embarrassment.  Ears can already be bonded or fitted with liners.

9. Completely Mounted: All seams shall be sewn, skin attached to back of form, lips tucked, grooming completed

10. Type of Materials: It is solely the contestants decision for selecting the type of form and position he/she desires.  Any method of ears can be utilized. 

11. General Rules: No other person(s) shall assist the contestant, in anyway, during the actual mounting process.  However ample time will be allowed for contestants to set up prior to actual mounting. All contestants will start at the same time.  Late arrivals will be allowed but will work from same start time as other contestants. A copy of the rules and score sheet will be given to each participant and he/she must sign it, stating that he/she understands these rules. Only one winner will be awarded, judges choice.
